Piper is an adorable 7-month-old Lab mix. What a survivor! This boy had been living in the drainage pipes (hence the name Piper) along busy I-20 since he was a baby. Thank goodness he had a Guardian Angel that fed him every day and looked out for him for over 4 months. But she wasn't able to get him to trust her enough to get close enough to catch him. She bought him toys and watched him play joyfully by himself, but it broke her heart that he was so young and so alone. Then one day he decided to play with the gravesite flowers at the neighboring cemetery... and the staff called Animal Control who trapped him. So... terrified, he waited in the shelter until he could be released to us. As soon as he passed his stray hold period, we rushed to get him.
EVERYTHING was new to him! People had never touched him and he had never played with other dogs. He'd been free his whole life, never in a cage or fence and never even inside for that matter. It was all so frightening - people were trying to touch him and dogs were barking at him. We were a bit worried about how he'd handle it all. And you know what has happened since then? Piper has discovered that this "petting" thing feels darn good! And doggy friends are a load of fun.
He's adjusting wonderfully to life indoors and he's got his housetraining pretty much mastered in a very short time. He loves to run and wrestle with his new doggy foster brothers. And getting toweled dry after being out in the rain is one of the best things ever... sometimes he even gets dried off just for the fun of it! He's super smart and very affectionate once he trusts you. His eyes just glisten with happiness. He'll make a wonderful new addition to a family that will slowly acclimate him to his brave new world.
UPDATE: Piper's foster mom thinks he is one of the sweetest little men she has ever met. He is really smart and very loving. He is very brave at home and so good with the other dogs in the house - all ages and sizes! He has yet to have an accident in the house and he comes flying across the yard or house when you call him. He takes treats very gently and loves for you to put your arms around him. If you ask him to dance, he'll stand on his back feet and rest his head on you as you rock him back and forth to the music. What a boy! He still needs work out in public and unfamiliar situations... but he has come so far! Piper is an active boy and he needs to continue improving his confidence. We think that Piper requires at least one other playful, confident dog in his new home.
