Wisky Waits for a Special Home

OK. It’s a stretch to see the physical traits you usually associate with a retriever. And, she’s not the typical size or body type you expect from the majority of our Squad Dogs. But – she’s a sweet girl that found herself in trouble at a local shelter and one of our volunteers could not bear to see her become a statistic. After all – she demonstrated the most important trait for any Squad Dog – she has the heart of a retriever.

This small, retriever wannabe is named Wisky, and this poor girl has been through the medical ringer – and she still has a long way to go.

Wisky came into the shelter with a shiny new collar and a tag – but, no one came to reclaim this little will-o-wisp who loves everyone – human and canine alike. Her days were numbered when her luck appeared to change. She was given a new tag that said she was a Squad Dog, and she was promptly moved away from the big, noisy shelter to a place where people seemed very concerned about making sure she was feeling OK.

Unfortunately, Wisky wasn’t feeling great – and what started as a cough, quickly went downhill, deteriorating into pneumonia very quickly. It was so bad that the vets recommended she have around the clock care at an emergency hospital, until she improved. It was touch and go for Wisky – but she is on the mend, only coughing once in a great while when she gets a little too energetic.

Wisky has been dealt a double whammy because she is heartworm positive, and will need to go through heartworm treatment. But, she needs to build her lungs back up after the pneumonia before the treatment can begin. That means another 4-6 weeks of waiting. To top it off, the vet also found a large growth on Wisky’s hind quarters which has been biopsied. The recommendation is to remove the growth for further testing – meaning more medical procedures for this sweet girl.

Throughout the whole ordeal, Wisky has remained in good spirits. She lives in the moment, and has no idea that she has a way to go before she is healthy and ready to find her permanent home. What Wisky really needs is a foster home with no other dogs, where she can be the center of attention and not have any temptations to run and play with canine buddies. We expect Wisky’s recovery to take around 3 months. If you would be interested in fostering Wisky throughout her recovery, please contact ADS at info@atlantadogsquad.org.

And, if you would like to help ADS pay for Wisky’s mounting medical expenses, we would be forever grateful. You can send a payment directly to Paypal via our donation page on her behalf or by sending a donation to Atlanta Dog Squad at PO Box 767188, Roswell, GA 30076. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated, and is tax-deductible, as ADS is recognized by the IRS as a 501c(3) organization.

Dogs like Wisky – who have a great temperament, but are in a bad situation – are the reason why ADS volunteers are involved in dog rescue. It’s seldom easy – but always rewarding.
