SquadDog Henry

Henry is cute, gentle and a total love-bug. He's also on the smaller side for a Golden Retriever. We guess that's probably because he's not a Golden Retriever at all. He's a Terrier mix - but he's pure Golden in personality! This precious 18-month-old boy's previous life was spent on a chain and he wound up in a high-kill shelter because his owner wouldn't provide him a decent home.

We found him to be just too darn precious to leave at the shelter - so now he's our honorary Golden. He loves people, is great with other dogs and really enjoys a good walk around the neighborhood, the lake or the park. Being able to see the world from a viewpoint other that a short chain is a miraculous thing. Henry is truly grateful for his new opportunity to find a loving home. He'll be totally devoted to his new family; he's already totally devoted to his new ADS friends.

Update from Henry's foster mom:

When Henry first moved in he was very jumpy and skittish. It was obvious that he had been treated very badly by someone in his past. Living in a house was pretty scary for him too. Everything was new to him so things that most dogs and people take for granted really scared the daylights out of him. If something fell off the counter, he assumed it was being thrown at him and he'd "head for the hills". If there were loud noises, he'd duck, cower and hide. In a very short period of time though, this boy has learned to trust people again.

Don't get me wrong - he has always known how to love. He's one of the biggest snuggle-bugs ever and a darn good hugger. But now he mostly accepts new things with confidence - he watches before reacting (before running away). When he first moved in, he refused to come in the bedroom where his foster siblings sleep. He was terrified to even walk into the room. He was much more comfy sleeping in his crate with a blanket thrown over for "protection". Now he matter-of-factly strolls into the room as though he owns it and has been doing it forever. He'll give you a "Scoot over-I'm coming up" look and before you know it he's snuggled up against you like he's never slept anywhere else.

If his foster brothers get a bit too rambunctious while playing, he'll position himself between them and me, to protect me. He's very mild-mannered and well behaved. He's never had any issues with another dog and he happily goes into his crate when you ask him to "kennel-up". He's pretty close to being fully housetrained and he never chews on anything other than his rawhide chews. He takes treats so gently you sometimes have to press them into his mouth because he doesn't open his lips far enough apart.

His favorite thing in the whole world is to be in your arms. And if you'd be willing to hold him forever, he'd happily oblige. Aside from occasionally being frightened by things he doesn't know, Henry is a very easy boy. He doesn't ask for much. He just wants to hang out wherever you are - and to be able to sneak up into your lap for a hug when he feels to need to share some love. This is one awesome, loving boy with an incredible amount of potential.
