Bud D is an amazingly wonderful 8-year-old Flat Coat Retriever mix. He’s a big boy - 80 pounds - and just as sweet as can be. He was so well liked at the shelter that a couple local rescues – that had no openings for any additional dogs - allowed him to attend their adoption events, even though he was a shelter dog. Everyone that met him fell for him. But potential adopters overlooked him for the younger, smaller dogs and no one had the space to bring him into their rescue program.
So, “sweet, perfect Buddy” waited and waited at the shelter. And despite it all, he remained a total love. When the shelter became too full to keep him any longer, ADS invited him to be a Squad Dog. We couldn’t be happier with our decision… and neither could he.
Bud D is housetrained and walks well on a leash, and he really loves riding in the car. He goes into a crate without issue but really doesn’t need one. He’s great with other dogs and he’s pretty fond of kids too. He still has a good amount of happy energy, enjoying a cheerful romp and long walks. The only thing that gives away his age is the gray on his muzzle and how well-behaved he is. He has the spirit and love of a youngster… and he’s hoping you’ll give him a shot to show you how incredible it is to have a mature dog in your family. He’ll quickly show you he is exactly what you have been missing… And he’ll have you wondering what you would ever do without him.
Update from Bud D's foster mom:
Buddy is very gentlemanly. We would have thought with his age and size he'd be a bit of a bump on a log but he LOVES car rides, playing fetch (we're working on the bringing it back part) and swimming. While his energy level is between low and medium, he’s able to keep up with our three-year-old and can almost out swim her. When you get him wet you quickly realize he's about half the size he appears when dry. He doesn't appear to be much of a shedder either, which was a surprise. He knows all the basic commands (sit, down, give and come). Overall he's a great dog that would be a wonderful addition to any home, especially one that wants an active dog to play with, but that also wants to bypass the puppy phase.
