SquadDog Eva

Poor little Eva - she’s had such a rough life and she’s only 12-weeks-old! She was purchased from a flea market when she was only 6-weeks-old and five weeks later, her owners surrendered her to a high-kill shelter because they were too busy to take care of her.

The saddest part of her story is that, in spite of it all, as far as puppies go, Eva’s pretty calm and well-behaved. She can even already go several hours without an accident, so she's well on her way to being housetrained! Of course puppies do require time and effort to properly train, but the end rewards are one-million-fold. Eva's also good with kids, cats, and other dogs. Her fur is shiny black and she’s got pretty white speckles on her chest. This pretty little gal is very personable – and she doesn’t seem to be afraid of anything. She just needs a life-time commitment of love and dedication.

Newest Update from Eva's foster mom:

Eva has been working really hard, and she is NEARLY housetrained! Good girl Eva!

Previous Update from Eva's foster mom:

I was able to record a dinner conversation between Eva and our dog Brody. I’ve translated it for everyone to read.

Brody: Hey Eva, can you not get your food bowl so close to mine?

Eva: oh, sorry. *giggle*

Brody: Um, can I ask you something?

Eva: Sure.

Brody: What do like you most about this place?

Eva: Oh, I don’t know, there’s so much to like. I love the kids in the neighborhood who always come and talk to me and rub my belly, and I love getting treats, and playing with all these cool toys and rolling around in the nice grass. I like to go for short walks in quiet, shaded places. I get too hot really fast and I want to go back home.

Brody: Yeah. I’ve noticed you‘re not a warm weather dog. I don’t think it’s so bad. But even when it’s cool you don’t like to take long walks with me?

Eva: Well you walk on that big road with all that traffic and I have a hard time with all that noise. I don’t even like it when the school bus goes by our house in the morning. It’s scary. What’s with all the questions anyway?

Brody: You’ve been here more than two weeks now and I really don’t know that much about you. Except that you really like to wrestle and play tug of war. And you like to take my toys and make me chase you to get them back. I’m really glad you stopped barking at the cats though. That was really annoying.

Eva: Yeah, mom asked me nicely to stop and I finally gave in. Besides they hiss at me, so I don’t think they’re really interested in playing.

Brody: They’re weird.

Eva: Yeah they really are. So what else do you want to know?

Brody: Um. Oh yeah. What is your favorite toy?

Eva: I like that big rubber tire a lot. It feels good on my gums. And I like the stuffed bottle toy a lot too. And anything that squeaks!! I love squeakers!

Brody: But you like to do other things than play with the toys and wrestle with me, right?

Eva: Sure do. I love going to the dog park! LOVE IT! Sometimes I just need to run off some steam ya know? Feel the wind in my ears.

Brody: Oh yeah, so do I! I love chasing those birds over there, too. Hmm Oh ok, here’s a deep question. How have you changed since you’ve been here.

Eva: Ooh let me think. Well, I’ve learned that I’m really good at problem solving. I love it when they put the treat under the bowl on the floor and I have to figure out how to get it. I love mental challenges. I’m not just pretty, I’m smart too. I wish mom knew more games like that for me to play. Hmm, what else. Oh, I’ve learned a lot of new tricks. Except I still need visual cues for a bunch of them because I forget the words sometimes. But I know “sit,” “down.” “crawl,” “speak,” “quiet,” “shhh,” “wait,” “off,” “stay.” I just don’t get what mom wants me to do when she tries to get me on my back.

Brody: She wants you to “rollover.” Man I still refuse to do that one. Hehe.

Eva: Why on earth would she want me to roll over?

Brody: I don’t know. She’s weird. Sometimes I can’t figure her out. What else have you learned?

Eva: Well. I’ve learned that I get my food faster if I sit and wait for it instead of trying to climb up mom’s leg to get it myself. And I’m learning to go potty outside. Though I still forget every now and then.

Brody: Yeah, but you’ve gotten better. I mean mom let’s you sleep with us now instead of in your crate. So you must be doing something right.

Eva: I guess so. I was so happy mom started letting me sleep in the big bed and I promised I would wake her up if I needed to go. But I haven’t needed to go during the night yet. Plus it is so nice to be able to snuggle up next to her. Maybe one day I can stay out of the crate during the day too. I mostly remember to wait until mom or Grandbowow take me outside to potty, but I get so excited sometimes that I forget to hold it and I have an accident. I get really embarrassed when that happens.

Brody: Aw, hang in there Eva. It’ll get better. You have less and less accidents everyday. You’ll get it.

Eva: Thanks Brods.

Brody: But you do know you snore, don’t you.

Eva: Whatever. You cry in your sleep.

Brody: Do not! Shhhh…Ok two more questions. Can you describe yourself in 5 words or less?

Eva: Gees, I didn’t realize you were such an intellectual dog.

Brody: I can be pretty pensive when I want to be.

Eva: Wow. Ok Let me see. hmm. I am playful, determined, confident, strong, and loving.

Brody: Ok last one. What is your dream home.

Eva: Oh I don’t know. I could be happy just about anywhere and with anybody, if I can be included in my humans’ activities and they gave me plenty of exercise and play time. I like to be where my people are. But I think I’d like to live with someone who appreciates my smarts and will continue to teach me new things, but with gentle methods. I would love to live with a lot of kids who will play with me in a big back yard with a tall fence to run around in. I love to climb and I’m supposed to grow to be 70 lbs. so I hope the fence is tall and sturdy. Mom’s afraid I’ll climb over a 4 ft fence soon, though she thinks I’ll be fine in an apartment too if I’m supervised and get enough exercise and mental stimulation. I also hope my new family likes to get lots and lots of kisses. I love giving kisses. I would also like to help out around the house some. I saw a dog on TV bringing a man his slippers. I would love to learn stuff like that. I would like to have another dog to play with, but if my new family doesn’t have one already, it’s no big deal. I just don’t want to give up my trips to the dog park to see my doggy friends. But most of all I really need lots and lots of love.

Brody: Well, we all love you here and I hope all your dreams come true. But we will all miss you when you leave us.

Eva: Oh, don’t make me cry. I will miss you too.

Brody: Hey, you wanna go play?

Eva: Yeah, I’ll race you to the Nylabone.

Brody: No fair! You started before me.

Eva: Na na na boo boo.
