The words "quiet comedienne" come to mind when we describe Mellie. Although she's definitely laid back in the house, she has an upbeat, social butterfly side to her personality. And, she gets a little wound up when it comes to food but not in a bad way. More like the "pick me, pick me" approach exhibited by Donkey in the Shrek movies. This happy-go-lucky nature is great to see since she was a stray before she came into our program. She wandered up to a construction site and one of the guys who worked there saw her. When he returned the next day, she was still there. He wanted to take her home, but started out without her on Day 2. But that's when Mellie wised up. She followed him -- and he just couldn't leave her behind. The good Samaritan kept Mellie for a couple of months, but unfortunately she was the third dog in a rental house that only allowed two. Luckily, the good Samaritan found ADS and Mellie became a Squad Dog.
Mellie is a true Lab who we judge to be around 4-5 years old. She fetches and adores the water. In fact, she jumped into her foster mom's small fish pond on the first day in her new foster home. She gets along with everyone -- both human and canine. She likes other dogs, but would probably be just as happy as the doggie star of the household. Mellie loves her walks, but is also content just chillin' on the tile floor or hardwoods in the house. Flushing frogs out from under the hostas and then herding them into the pond is a nightly ritual now. Which brings us back to her comedic personality. Take a little Ethel Mertz, a smidgeon of Queen Latifah and a dash of Chevy Chase (for the prat falls) -- mix 'em all together with a big dose of sugar and you have Ms. Mellie. She's one of a kind. If you need a dog to brighten your day with a smile, look no further. Mellie is your gal.
