With fur as white as snow, Aspen is a rather calm girl for a Labrador mix only a year old. This sweet young thing unfortunately found herself at the shelter with little or no help of getting out. But, when ADS had an opportunity to help a couple of dogs from her shelter, Aspen was at the top of the list.
Watching Aspen meet a new family made us realize that she is very shy. She seldom goes up to strangers and rarely looks them directly in the eyes. It's almost as if she has been taught to know her place and not deviate from those instructions. Yet, her good nature and willingness to please is very evident, even if it takes her a while to warm up to people. She will do well in a more caring environment that understands that she is not a full-throttle, play-til-you-drop Lab. This girl needs a lot of love and patience in her new home.
Aspen is on the small side, weighing in around 55 pounds and she appears to be housetrained. She gets along well with other dogs and does not try to dominate in any way. It would be easy to see her cuddling up with a single person or a couple that wants a smaller, gentler dog with a nice temperament. Be sure to check out Aspen if you're interested in a retriever that's more diminuitive, but still has a huge heart.
Update from Aspen's Foster Mom:
Sweet Aspen is calm but playful, totally house-trained and walks into the crate just fine with encouragement. She is learning to share toys with her foster sisters and to give them space during dinnertime.
In the evenings, Aspen likes to lounge in front of the couch, nuzzling toys and watching the Olympics (biathalon and hockey are her favorite events). At night she sleeps on the floor next to my bed (but wouldn't surprise me if she got ambitious and jumped up to cuddle).
She takes treats very gently (a child could give them to her) and does pretty well on the leash, not pulling, but not quite heeling.
Aspen is a big fluffy baby, and too cute for words. We are really enjoying her and look forward to helping her find her forever home.
