SquadDog Hershey

Did you ever read about Clifford the Big Red Dog? Well, ADS has it’s very own version - Hershey the Big Chocolate Puppy.

We received an urgent call from a local shelter; a “very large” 7-month-old Lab puppy had just been dropped off. His owners had come to the realization that he was just too large and too active for their small apartment. Well, we had helped out large puppies before, so we were happy to help out this pup who was estimated to be 60 to 65 pounds – pretty big for such a youngster.

When our volunteer arrived to pick him up, she was surprised to find Hershey actually tipped the scales at 88 pounds! That’s one very big baby! On the trip to the vet, she gave him a rawhide bone and he loved it! He showed his appreciation by periodically offering his newest friend his prized chew bone. He’d drop it in her lap, give her a smooch and then gently nudge her to ask if he could have it back. What a sweetie! He eventually settled under her arm and munched on his bone periodically nudging her as if to make sure his new friend was real. He was super happy to have a pal to spend time with.

In addition to his size, Hershey is beautiful, and quite strong and energetic. His deep brown fur shines nicely and he smiles like a champ. He offers everyone his friendship; he’s never met a stranger and he absolutely must greet everyone. He wants to be with you all the time and he doesn’t like being left alone much. He loves to run and wrestle; he’s all boy and all action.

He’s very gentle when taking treats and he happily surrenders what he has whenever asked. The only command he knows right now is “sit” and he does it nicely when asked; however his enthusiasm for your company gets the best of him immediately and he bounds about continuing to play, having difficulty reigning in his joy for fun and friends.

Hershey’s a smart boy with a lot of potential. He’ll need family that will work with him to teach him jumping isn’t acceptable and to help him learn all the other things a good dog needs to know.
