This handsome devil is named Duke, and he possesses many of the traits associated with the Labrador breed. In fact, his foster mom says that he will play fetch with the tennis ball until you can no longer throw it -- now that's a Labrador Retriever, for sure.
You may wonder how such a well-behaved, beautiful dog ended up at an area shelter. Unfortunately for Duke, his owner died suddenly and there was no family to take him in. So, Duke found himself being turned into the county shelter. Local government officials noticed some potential in Duke and tested him to see if he might have a career searching and identifying contraband coming across state borders. Duke was smart and well-behaved enough -- but he just didn't like being surrounded by the loud noises of large vehicles. So, back to the shelter he went.
A local volunteer fell in love with Duke and contacted ADS to rescue him. When we saw this 2 year old boy, we knew that he was definitely Squad Dog material. Duke rode like a champ in the back of the car on the trip back to Atlanta. He's not always ready to get into the vehicle, but once he's in there, he rides very well.
Duke simply adores people and really wants to be with his family. He gets a little excited when he meets other canines, but settles in nicely after the initial greeting. Duke is house trained, does well in the house and knows a few commands. Like any good Lab, he does have a few quirks. He doesn't like having his tail touched and he doesn't really like the stairs inside his foster home. In fact, he will sleep all night at the foot of the stairs. Mind you, he has no trouble with the stairs going into the back yard to play -- just those darn stairs inside. But, he can be bribed with food to go up and down them with a little patience.
Duke's foster mom can't say enough good things about his sweet boy. She describes him as have a super personality and being incredibly well-behaved. He prefers not to be left alone. This could be a result of losing his former owner and having several moves before landing in this foster home. But, all in all, Duke is definitely a dog that wants to be around people. This guy is a loyal, good-nature dog that loves to run and play. If you want to adopt a loving Lab, please be sure to come out and meet Duke
