Larry was picked up as a very terrified, emaciated stray. That's not unusual; what is unusual is that he is blind. Some shelter volunteers who really liked him asked us to help: we just couldn't say no.
The shelter estimated that Larry was probably 10 years old. We soon discovered he was heart worm positive, not neutered and had a bad upper respiratory infection. The good news was that our vets believe he is closer to 6-7 years old. Lack of care had really aged our poor boy.
Our first goal was to get Larry to stabilize and gain weight. At first we couldnt get him to eat much of anything. We tried hot dogs, every type of canned dog food and "people" food imaginable. Nothing appealed to him until we found the silver culinary bullet and introduced him to rotisserie chicken... it was a hit - and he's slowly putting some weight back on.
Although we had some very wonderful volunteers who wanted to take Larry into foster care, their homes can't offer the conditions that he really needs to thrive. He is in boarding until we find a foster home that is relatively calm, where his health can improve and he can feel safe again. Larry is improving every day, but we know that he really needs a loving home (foster or permanent) in order to get back to 100 %. The sooner he can move into a home, the sooner he will start learning to trust and love again.
